As a major industrial player and contributor to the Botswana economy, Debswana subscribes to the philosophy that its entrepreneurial success should be underpinned by social and economic responsibility. The Company aspires to play an active role in the long term economic growth of the country.

Business Development Unit
As part of this drive, whose objective is to enrich the nation through diversification, the Company established a Business Development Unit within its Supply Chain Management (SCM) in 2000 to create local supply capacity.
The key objectives of SCM’s business development initiative are to
  • encourage foreign-based suppliers of Debswana to set up operations in Botswana,
  • identify and develop citizen owned enterprises that have the potential to grow and supply Debswana and other users in Botswana,
  • encourage foreign investors to establish partnerships/ joint ventures with citizens, and to
  • Promote Citizen Economic Empowerment.
The cumulative achievements to date include the establishment of operations by 50 foreign companies in Botswana, with a total investment of over P176 million, which has created 1611 jobs for citizens. Thirty-seven of these companies have also formed joint ventures with citizens.
SCM business development function focuses on identifying and developing citizen owned SMMEs that have the potential to grow and supply Debswana and other clients in Botswana. To date, 44 local companies have been assisted, resulting in the creation of over 2,100 new jobs within these companies.
Debswana also has other investments in Morupule Colliery and Peo Holdings.
