A BETTER WAY OF DOING BUSINESS

JWANENG: Jwaneng Mine has been in operation for almost 25 years. Since starting operation, the mining method most convenient and economically viable to use was the open cast method. As the pit gets deeper, engineers are constantly challenged to come up with better ways of ensuring that mining remains economically practical for the entire lifespan of the Mine.

A number of projects have been identified with the aim of improving efficiency and economic capability of Jwaneng Mine. Among the projects is the moving of the Main Treatment Plant (MTP) to create way for Cut 8.

Another is the early access shaft which is currently underway. The project aims at providing advance knowledge on the ground condition likely to be encountered when sinking the mine shaft to go underground in future. One other project is the Recrush Tailings Face Conveyor (a moveable conveyor belt system) which is anticipated to be up and running by mid next year.

Jwaneng Mine’s Section Engineer for Projects, Steve Van Wyk has revealed that they are busy working on the Recrush Tailings Face Conveyor Project which he anticipates will be running by June 2008. According to Van Wyk, the project is a new concept for both the Mine and Debswana.
