Debswana Public Private Partnership (PPP) for provision of Masa - the government’s antiretroviral therapy (ART) programme - through the company mine hospitals in Jwaneng, Orapa and Letlhakane Mines was awarded a Pan African Health Finalist Award 2006.
“Through this partnership ART is extended to communities in which we operate at no additional infrastructure nor health manpower costs to the government, a true corporate social investment,” revealed Dr Onalethata Johnson, Debswana’s Group Manager, HIV/AIDS Impact Management.
She revealed that the awards are intended to recognize, celebrate and honor companies and organizations that play a vital role in health care in Africa and have excelled in innovation, strategy, impact and sustainability in addressing these issues. “This was an inaugural ceremony and the event is planned to be annual henceforth,” said Dr Johnson.
Debswana’s partnership with the government was short listed in the PPP category (among a total of 30 entrants from all over Africa) where the winner ended up being Bristol Myers Squib (BMS)– Secure the Future Foundation.
She added: “While we didn’t clinch the ultimate prize we are all the same very proud of this achievement and were particularly humbled on noting the magnitude and scope of BMS Secure the Future Foundation - the winners in this category.”
She further honored the Debswana men and women whom she said are at the forefront of health care provision without whom this would not have been possible.
