DEBSWANA COMMITS P250 000.00 TO BROADWAY MUSICAL BYE BYE BIRDIE

GABORONE May 23/07: In a bid to nurture art in Botswana, Debswana has committed a sum of P250 000 towards the local production of an international musical classic Bye Bye Birdie.

The initiative is part of Debswana’s continued determination to assist Botswana youth to expose their talent and skills in arts and culture. To be performed in Gaborone between June 21st and July 18th, 2007, the show has attracted high profile viewer-ship and attention with the Vice President, Ian Khama Seretse Khama being its Patron. One of the leading players in the production is Debswana’s Group Secretary, Joe Matome who plays Mr. MacAfee, Kim’s grumpy father. Matome is a veteran actor who has featured on two local productions; Joseph and the amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat played in 2005 and Annie in 2006.

Bye Bye Birdie depicts a story around the 1963 assassination of former American President John F. Kennedy.

Alongside creating sustainable partnerships with the communities through its Corporate Social Investment programme, Debswana is also seeking to develop an active employee involvement programme which supports the company’s CSI efforts.
