Jwaneng (30 April 2008): Debswana regrets to announce that Jwaneng Mine yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 29th April) experienced an incident in which two of its employees were injured as they were decommissioning a redundant power line at the open pit at around 1400 hrs.
The incident occurred when the man-lifter boom collapsed and the two were thrown out of the basket from a height onto the ground. The employees were rushed to Jwaneng Mine Hospital where they were confirmed stable before being taken to Gaborone Private Hospital for further assessment.
The two employees were involved in relocating a transformer yard to a new site. There was a redundant line passing over the site that had to be removed and they had just completed disconnecting the wires when the accident occurred. Investigations are underway to establish the cause of the incident.
Jwaneng Mine has had an outstanding safety record this year with a total of 156 consecutive days without a serious injury. Last week the Mine held a ‘safety stand down’ where employees stopped work for one hour to discuss issues of safety. The aim of a safety stand down, which happens quarterly, is to highlight the fact that the safety of employees is more important than production. In addition, two weeks ago the Mine received a Safety and Health Sustainability Award recognition for it safety performance.
Jwaneng Mine is also OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) accredited. This is a safety standard which requires strict compliance to international safety policies and procedures.
