THE WAY FORWARD - DEBSWANA AND HIV AND AIDS

GABORONE: As part of the comprehensive HIV prevention and care programme in Debswana the company has decided to carry out another prevalence survey.  According to Dr. Onalethata Johnson, Debswana Group Manager: HIV/AIDS Impact Management, the survey will give the company a clearer understanding as to whether the HIV epidemic is under control or not and whether the downward trend in HIV prevalence is indeed continuing.

The previous surveys noted that the overall HIV prevalence had reduced from 28.8% in 1999 to 19.9% in 2003.

“This undertaking will in no doubt continue to put Debswana as the benchmark in the eyes of the world in managing the business risk associated with HIV/AIDS as it’s well known that the company was the first in the world to administer anti- retroviral therapy to its employees,” said Dr Johnson.

This survey will only be carried out first at Head Office and will hopefully roll out to operations.
