GABORONE: “Botswana is really an amazing country which is beyond my expectation! Botswana is a country full of passion and vision about the future. I trust these are the results of healthy cooperation between the company’s shareholders, Botswana Government and De Beers,” said Lavin Lam, Business Director, Diamond Trading Company - Asia Pacific in Hong Kong yesterday at the end of a three days visit by the Trade Spokespersons from China and Hong Kong.
Another visitor, Kent Wong, Director, Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Co.Hong Kong said his trip will have a lasting impression about the country and its dynamic and friendly people, and that Africa is full of life and power. “Botswana is the best country in Africa because the people are full of passion to their own country.”
The Trade Spokesperson were on a mission to have an eye witness account of the developments brought about by diamonds in Botswana. They had the opportunity to visit the ‘Prince of Mines,’ Jwaneng where they were given an appreciation of the mining processes. Here in Gaborone, the visitors had a tour of Botswana Diamond Valuing Company as well as the Children’s Village in Tlokweng. Debswana supports the Village. Debswana Public and Corporate Affairs Manager, Jacob Sesinyi, told them that Debswana accounts for 80% of Botswana’s foreign earnings and 50% of public revenue. Mr Sesinyi also revealed that Debswana is the largest employer after government with about 6 500 employees.
