Russell Simmons to visit Jwaneng Mine

JWANENG: Russell Simmons, the most important businessman in the history of rap music, is scheduled to visit Jwaneng Mine on Tuesday 28 November. Producer of popular hip hop artist Kanye West, Simmons is co-founder of the Def Jam label, which made hip-hop a music of choice for a generation of teenagers.

Simmons is on a fact-finding mission to Botswana and South Africa. As owner of the Simmons Jewellery Company, he is also interested in learning how his relationships in the diamond business can help to enhance the educational and economic empowerment of people and communities in Africa.

In Jwaneng, Simmons and his entourage will be welcomed by Debswana Deputy Managing Director Len Makwinja. Following a video on ‘Diamonds For Good’ by De Beers Botswana Chief Executive Sheila Khama, Simmons will be taken on a tour of the pit, Acacia School and the Infectious Diseases Care Centre (IDCC). Simmons will also visit the Cheetah Conservation Project in Jwana Game Park.
