In pursuit of its vision to become a global benchmark diamond business, Debswana has launched a new strategy to transform the company into a High Performance Organisation (HPO), operating at global benchmark levels of performance and efficiency by 2013. This follows the completion of its five year strategy (North Star 2010) at the end of December last year.

As part of this new strategy, an Organisational Re-alignment exercise, has been launched and will be implemented across all its operations, namely,  Gaborone, Jwaneng  Mine and Orapa and Letlhakane Mines (OLM).

The Organisational Re-Alignment aims to further optimise processes, structures, headcount, support/core mix, spans of control and management operating system companywide towards global benchmarks. The overall goal is to achieve greater integration of business support services so that mining operations can be supported more effectively.

The re-alignment comes soon after the completion of the Operations Review exercise, which was only implemented at Jwaneng Mine and Orapa and Letlhakane Mines.  Following the completion of this project, Debswana underwent a business review which revealed that although Operations Review has made improvements in certain areas at the operations, there are still opportunities to be explored in order to realise the company’s vision, hence this holistic approach. These opportunities include improvements in safety, cost performance, asset utilization and overall productivity. Leveraging these opportunities will ensure the long term sustainability of the business for the benefit of employees, shareholders and the nation at large.

The Debswana Managing Director, Mr Jim Gowans recently undertook a series of meetings with employees across the company to introduce this intervention.

The Organisational Re-Alignment  exercise is expected to be undertaken within a period of eight months and began with a Business Review in February, followed by a Development and design phase during March until May and an implementation phase which will take place between June to September this year.
