The Debswana Managing Director, Jim Gowans will on Thursday May 26th, 2011 handover a Vocational Training Unit Block at the Francistown Centre for the Deaf. Debswana funded construction of the block, which has three (3) classrooms, to the tune of 488- thousand Pula. The block houses among others, Leather Works, Home Economics and Wood Work.
 
The handover ceremony is a milestone for the Francistown Centre for the Deaf and symbolizes Debswana’s commitment to partnering with deserving local institutions to facilitate the equipping of  Batswana with education and skills that will sustainably and positively  impact their lives and Botswana’s economy, said the company spokesperson, Esther Kanaimba- Senai.
 
Through its Corporate Social Investment programme, Debswana endeavors to create a legacy of prosperity, sustainability and empowerment of communities in Botswana. Its key focus areas include education, environmental conservation, arts and culture as well as sports development.
 
The Francistown Centre for the Deaf is an institution of the Botswana Society for the Deaf which was formed in 1978 as the Ramotswa Society for the Deaf. The Botswana Society for the Deaf provides services to nearly 200 profoundly deaf children from all parts of Botswana at its two (2) centers for deaf education in Ramotswa and Francistown.
