The GM’s Spring Cycle Race is an annual event that was started in 2002 by former Jwaneng Mine General Manager, Seb Sebetlela. Being an avid cyclist, Seb wanted to encourage other individuals to participate in the sport while prescribing to the wellness value of the Company. Additionally, Seb saw the race as an opportunity to raise funds which could be used for a good cause. Proceeds from this event have been used to support local charities. In 2003 funds raised through the race were donated to victims of the Tsunami phenomenon in Asia.
Besides being an initiative through which the company and its employees has been able to advance its Corporate Social Investments, the event has provided Jwaneng Mine an opportunity through which it has been able to showcase its spectacular landscape and open pit mine. Annually the mine invites cyclists from Botswana and neighboring countries to spend the week-end at the mining town. Cyclists and their families get the opportunity to visit the mine and the mine owned Jwana game park to view wildlife.
