Debswana re-affirms its commitment to the growth of SMMEs

Mr. Kgolagano Banabotlhe, Debswana's Strategy and Business Improvement Manager has buttressed the point that "Debswana continues to seek ways of increasing local spend in order to facilitate SMMEs growth, economic diversification and job creation." He was speaking at the Local Enterprise Authority roadshow and market day held on the 22nd of May 2015 in Palapye.

Mr. Banabotlhe indicated that "It is almost certain that as SMME you will continue to benefit from our quest to leave a lasting legacy in the communities we work with. In the Central region, as Debswana, we are committed to work with LEA and other stakeholders to support the growth of SMMEs."

Debswana has supported many SMME's through the Peo Venture Capital (Pty) Ltd. Peo Venture Capital is a business development initiative established by Debswana Diamond Company and De Beers Holdings Botswana in 1997. It is committed to promoting and facilitating the establishment of commercially viable enterprises in Botswana as well as promoting the involvement of Batswana as owners in business. Since its inception, Peo has funded over 60 businesses, with an investment value of more than P36 million in both loans and equity.  To the present these businesses have created over 1300 sustainable jobs.

Mr. Banabotlhe concluded by encouraging the SMMEs to live up to one of Debswana's values of "being passionate" about what they do and sell so that they become successful in their corporate endeavours. He reminded them that "they are fighting a noble battle and that as entrepreneurs their success will depend on their passion and attitude towards challenges." While Banabotlhe acknowledged the challenges faced by entrepreneurs, he also recognized the opportunities they have created in terms of employment for others.
