Debswana Diamond Company has sponsored the International
Working Group (IWG) to the tune of P200 000 which will be channelled towards
the Women’s Sport Leadership Academy (WSLA). The Academy, which runs from 14
to 16 May, is a three day event that will focus on Sports Leadership and Sports
Management training for over 40 local and international candidates.
Debswana’s Corporate Affairs Manager who is responsible
for Social Performance, Boikhutso Malela, says that Debswana is proud to
support the IWG since the company values a sporting culture based on both
women and men being equal partners in advancing sport.
Through Debswana’s sponsorship the Academy,
which has traditionally been held in Chichester in the United Kingdom, will for
the first time in 2018 be held in Africa and in Botswana. This milestone will
contribute towards ensuring women in Africa benefit from
and participate in the Academy.
Botswana will host the 7th International
Working Group on Women and Sport conference in Gaborone from the 17-20 May. The World Conference, which is expected to attract 50
athletes and 600 other participants from about 50 countries, occurs every four years
and it gives women across the globe an opportunity to discuss issues affecting
them.
IWG is a global network that aims to
increase full participation of women and girls in sport as well as addressing
barriers to involvement. Its mission is accomplished through action and
influence of the network as a catalyst in engaging governmental and
non-governmental organisations and individuals for the advancement and
empowerment of women and sport globally.
Debswana is committed to promoting a more
inclusive culture where diversity of all forms is highly valued at all levels
of our society.
