INTRODUCTION
Debswana’s purpose is to turn diamond dreams into lasting reality. In addition, the company also seeks to leave a lasting legacy beyond diamond mining. Through the CSI programme, Debswana aims to work with communities to co-create solutions that will assist in improving their livelihoods. CSI will enable Debswana to live its values of ‘Show you Care’ and ‘Shape the Future’ by contributing to Botswana’s socio–economic development.
HOW TO COMPLETE AND SUBMIT THIS PROPOSAL TEMPLATE
Please use the application form provided on the following pages. Only submissions in this form will be assessed.
All sections of the application form need to be completed in order for your application to be considered.
Please keep a copy of your application, as your organisation will be required to report on the activities set out in the application should funding be approved. If you are submitting your application by hand, please ask for a photocopy.
Completed proposals must be submitted to corporateaffairs@debswana.bw, or by hand to Jwaneng or Orapa mines from [person/office responsible].
Your proposal will then be reviewed and you will be told whether your request has been successful or not. Submitting this form does not guarantee that funding will be awarded.
FUNDING GUIDELINES
To be considered for funding, your organisation must meet the following basic criteria:
It must be a registered non-profit organisation or exclusively public institution (e.g. school or university) or comparable organisation
It must show evidence of ability to manage funding (e.g. financial statements)
There must be clear governance, leadership and accountability mechanisms
Its programmes must have a wide impact within the community, not just meet the needs of a few
Beneficiaries must be involved in planning, and programmes must respond to identified community needs
Only funding requests that are aligned with Debswana’s strategic focus areas will be considered. These are: community development, women and girls’ empowerment, or biodiversity and conservation. An overview of each focus area is given below.
Sustainable Communities: This focus area will promote sustainable communities while providing essential support for vulnerable members of society. It will enable operations to respond to community needs in the following areas:
Water and sanitation services
Enterprise Development (community-based revenue generating projects that also include innovation and technology based solutions)
Childhood development
Enhancement of health and school facilities
Sports Development (skills development)
Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Heritage
Women, girls and people living with disabilities: This focus area seeks to promote the empowerment of women and girls, as well as people living with disabilities who are usually marginalised, and contribute towards developing a society where all people have equal opportunity to participate in the economic, social, and cultural development of their communities and country:
Empowerment of women and girls (skills development and entrepreneurial initiatives)
People living with disabilities
Sustainable Development: This focus area seeks to promote:
sustainable use of natural resources, e.g. recycling
Clean energy, e.g. solar
Energy efficiency
Tourism development
Debswana is NOT able to support or fund the following through its social investments: party political activities; individuals; public office holders; activities of a religious nature; professional sporting activities; sports sponsorship; overdraft and debt reduction; sponsorships and marketing campaigns; commercial entities or individuals in a profit-making capacity; service clubs such as Rotary and Lions Clubs.
