Debswana’s Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM) recently partnered with Cyber Smart Botswana on a meaningful initiative aimed at empowering young people with the knowledge and tools required to navigate today’s increasingly complex digital landscape. Hosted at Letlhakane Senior Secondary School, the programme focused on equipping learners with essential online safety skills, promoting responsible digital behaviour, and raising awareness about the risks associated with internet usage. OLDM supported the campaign with a sponsorship of P5,000.00.
OLDM Information Management Analyst, Alebakwe Magola, brought practical insight and real-world relevance to the discussions. He guided learners through key topics including cyberbullying, online dating risks, phishing scams, identity theft, catfishing, peer pressure in digital spaces, and the growing threat of sextortion. His presentation not only highlighted the dangers present online but also provided practical strategies to help learners protect themselves and make informed decisions.
Learners actively participated in the sessions, engaging in discussions, asking questions, and working through real-life scenarios to deepen their understanding.
As technology continues to play a central role in education and social interaction, initiatives such as this are critical in ensuring that learners are not only digitally literate but also responsible digital citizens.
