OLDM BUSINESS PARTNER IRON BASE GIVES BACK TO MMATSHUMO PRIMARY SCHOOL

Debswana Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM) business partner, Iron Base (PTY) Ltd, recently donated stationery and constructed a playground for Mmatshumo Primary School.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Iron Base Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Elijah Tsheko, said that following a needs assessment conducted by the company in collaboration with the school management, Iron Base identified the need to construct a playground and donate learning materials. As part of the initiative, the company donated 10 pre-school tables, 30 pre-school chairs, colouring books, crayons and educational charts to decorate and enhance the pre-school classrooms.

In addition, Tsheko said Iron Base addressed some of the school’s infrastructure challenges by refurbishing the windows and floors of three classrooms. The project, which cost P110,037.91, reflects Iron Base’s commitment to uplifting the education sector in the Boteti region.

Tsheko encouraged other businesses to emulate their gesture and support community development, noting that government alone cannot meet all community needs. He also encouraged pupils to take their education seriously as it can open doors to future success.

OLDM Asset Management Engineer, Mr. Boitumelo Maruping, applauded Iron Base for the gesture despite the prevailing economic challenges, adding that Debswana encourages its business partners to support communities within its Area of Influence. Maruping explained that the Engineering Department has adopted Mmatshumo village through the Debswana Employee Volunteerism Programme and has supported Mmatshumo Primary School in various ways, including hosting an annual career fair to empower learners.

He added that the department also participates in the school’s prize-giving ceremonies to reward top-performing students and is planning to develop a sports facility at the school. Furthermore, the department has donated warm clothing and shoes to vulnerable members of the Mmatshumo community.

Additionally, Iron Base has committed P12,000 towards supporting a feeding programme for underweight children for a period of 12 months, which will be implemented through Mmatshumo Clinic. Kgosi Keletshwaretse Phetsogang commended Iron Base for the generous donation, stating that the initiative will significantly improve learning conditions and support community wellbeing in Mmatshumo village. He encouraged learners to take good care of the donated furniture and use it to improve their academic performance.
