Orapa Athletics Club (OAC) recently hosted a Welcome ceremony for Lee Eppie, the Olympic silver medalist to formally commend him for the exceptional performance at the World Athletics Championships which were in Tokyo, Japan. During the Welcome ceremony that was attended by officials from OAC, Botswana Athletics Association (BAA), coaches, young athletes and parents, OAC gifted him P8 000 as a token of appreciation for Eppie’s achievements.
During the ceremony, Eppie’s coaches spoke highly of his character, describing him as disciplined, dedicated and hardworking athlete. Additionally, the BAA Vice President Technical, Kenneth Kikwe stated that Lee’s success was made possible by his discipline and hard work. He further underscored the importance of shielding Lee from career threats such as doping which is currently a challenge in athletics worldwide. “Lee has a promising future and we have witnessed him grow through all seasons, into the champion he is today. Therefore, he needs to be guarded from all risks that might jeopardize his career such as doping, unhealthy eating and others,” said Kikwe.
In his remarks, OLDM Information Management Manager, Seoposengwe Galeeme applauded Lee Eppie for making history and placing Botswana firmly on the global map at the World Athletics Championships. “You made us proud and I am without doubt that your success will be a strong motivation to the children coming after you,” said Galeeme. He also thanked Debswana for being part of the journey in athletics, highlighting that it has previously sponsored the National Championships from 2022- 2024 and the World Junior Championships in 2024. With this achievement having nurtured it over the years, it affirms Debswana’s commitment towards sports development and excellence.
Lee Eppie expressed his deepest appreciation to his unconditionally supportive parents and the Orapa Athletics Club for the huge role it has played in his athletics journey and development, stating that the club provided immense support, covering financial needs, logistics and essential resources to enable him to participate at the athletics competitions even outside the country, during his junior school days. Addressing the young athletes present, he stressed the importance of staying focused, disciplined and resilient as they grow in their athletics journey.
